Singh Saab the Great Movie Reviews:
Starring: Sunny Deol
Director: Anil Sharma
MuzicMag Rating: 3/5
The performances are a mixed bag. Sunny paaji is obviously on top of his game. His comedic punches, his stirring Punjabi dialogue are all over-the-top but perfectly suitable in the context of the film. Newcomer Urvashi Rautela plays Sunny’s wife. Even though she’s much younger in real life, she looks her part in the film. She has good screen presence, decent acting chops and it helps that she’s equally beautiful. Amrita Rao is just about okay in a limited role. She’s the one telling Singh Saab’s story and that’s the only worthwhile dimension to her character. Prakash Raj has incomparable talent. Movies like Kannathil Muthamittal and Kanchivaram are a testament to his ability. But here he’s just repeating his Wanted, Singham and Dabangg 2 acts. Like it or not, SSTG is a mass entertainer. It’s a Sunny Deol vehicle; it’s fun albeit a bit jaded thanks to its director’s craft. But this larger-than-life hero still delivers a mean punch.

There’s a reason India doesn’t need its own version of Marvel’s the Incredible Hulk. It’s because we have our own resident one-man-destruction-army Sunny Deol. Even though he's not entirely invincible his legendary dhai kilo ka haath is enough to stop speeding cars and crush human bones. Ever since the days of Border and Gadar, Sunny paaji’s on-screen persona stands for superhuman strength, a kind heart and a very intimidating temper. Leagues of his fans will suggest he is the indisputable king of sardars. And Singh Saab The Great (SSTG) is just a long homage to all that makes Sunny Deol a veritable movie legend.
Of course, all the todu (awesome in Punjabi) things that Sunny paaji can do in a movie need to be taken with a pinch of salt. And when it comes to SSTG you need quite a few pinches. Director Anil Sharma designs and executes this movie like a ’80s and ’90s masala hero vehicle. The movie looks like a 2013 production but it feels like a solid ’90s actioner. It’s reminiscent of movies like Ghayal and Narsimha. The hero is cornered by an evil mafia lord. Rampant corruption adds to the hero’s frustrations. The damsels - the hero’s sister and wife - are always on the radar of the lecherous henchmen. The hero’s family is his emotional Achilles’ heel.
Despite its jaded narrative formulae SSTG has one thing movies of the ’90s didn’t have. Great slow motion action shots and stylishly choreographed action sequences. Sunny paaji looks as big and indestructible as an army tank. He punches even harder. That’s not all. The movie also has a contemporary track where Singh Saab starts a media-fuelled revolution to eradicate corruption. And it’s done with sting operations, art of war and other non-violent and intelligent means.
