Lifetime Achievement Award to Surinder Shinda
At the launch of the first annual cultural awards of the Punjabi Circle International, the UK Prime Minister David Cameron heaped compliments on the Punjabi community in the United Kingdom.
Dominic Grieve, Britain’s Attorney General and Seema Malhotra, Shadow Minister for Women and Equalities jointly awarded Lifetime Achievement Award to the Punjabi singer and actor Surinder Shinda. According to the Attorney Dominic Grieve, “The Punjabi contribution to life in the UK is not just an economic and financial one but also it is the sharing of the Punjabi culture with us all.”
The citation said,”Shinda is an Indian singer of Bhangra music with traditional Punjabi roots who is considered a grandfather of modern Punjabi music has numerous hit songs to his credit such as Putt Jattan De, Balbiro Bhabhi, and Kaher Singh De Mout.” Shinda has performed in Punjabi films like Putt Jattan De and Uccha Dar Babbe Nanak Da.
PM Cameron appreciated his work in the field of singing and acting, and also acknowledged the youngsters who’ve brought a different tinge to music by remixing it.
A multi-lingual socio-political radio broadcaster Sathi Ludhianvi, a bhangra musician known as the Godfather of Bhangra in the West British-Indian Channi Singh, and a London-based Punjabi poet, lyricist and radio broadcaster Chaman Lal Chaman were other awardees who were acknowledged by Punjabi Circle International.
