Popular Punjabi singer Miss Pooja has decided to join BJP and political circles expect her to be fielded from Hoshiarpur (reserve) constituency in the coming Lok Sabha elections.
Punjab BJP president Kamal Sharma said she would be joining the party on Monday. “It is an unconditional decision by Miss Pooja and nothing has been committed,” said Sharma when asked if she has been promised a ticket.
In the past one decade, Pooja virtually ruled the Punjabi music scene and it was considered almost imperative for most Punjabi singers to have duet songs with her in their albums to succeed. She has sung in a few hundred albums, mostly duets with scores of male singers.
Gurinder Kaur Kainth, nicknamed Pooja, did not drop the prefix ‘Miss’ even after she got married around three years ago, as it had become part of her identity. Her singing career thrived for around a decade and she was arguably the most popular Punjabi singer.
Though she remained a singing sensation yet the four Punjabi films in which she acted, including three in which she played the lead, flopped. It was the brand value of her name that a film was even titled after her “Pooja Kiven ain”.
According to sources in BJP, the party not only aims to attract dalit voters as Pooja hails from the same community, it also wants to make it a point in caste equations that she is married to a Lubana community member Romi Tahli. The community also has considerable presence in the constituency.
