Jal Movie Reviews and Ratings From All Film Critics, Subhash K Jha from IANS praises the movie saying, "Jal is a work of remarkable resonance" However Paloma Sharma from Rediff reviewed it totally negative with 0.5

Jal‬ is a movie set up in the Rann Of Kutch, which appears to be like a typical 'art' film, but is as commercial as any other movie. The movie is a story of Bakka (Purab Kohi) who is regarded as the God of water. He tries to combat the scarcity of water faced in the desert and the movie mainly depicts what all he endures and bares. The movie gets over dramatic at times, but the commendable performances and the perfect accent of the actors make up for it. The movie, at a point of time seems stretched and repetitive. The movie starts off on a strong note and has scenes which make tend to make the movie interesting. But the movie gets lingered on and the end becomes way too predictable. The movie dawdles between commercial and art cinema. Jal is a one time watch and will probably not be liked by the majority of the general bollywood audience.

The film was screened and received praise at various film festivals including the "New Currents" section of the Busan International Film Festival 2013 and in the "Indian Panorama" section of the International Film Festival of India.

Subhash K Jha from IANS praises the movie saying, "Jal is a work of remarkable resonance. The sheer visual mastery of Malik's directorial debut takes your breath away. The sheer velocity and spatial harmony of the intrinsically disturbed desert scape, the incredibly nuanced sound design and the powerhouse performances by actors who forget the camera is watching them, make this a work whipped into eternity by vast stretches of unchained artistry". He rated the movie with four stars out of five.

However Paloma Sharma from Rediff reviewed it totally negative with 0.5 rating saying, "Jal takes its own time in unravelling, fooling itself into believing that a certain Govarikar is its creator, and when it finally does reach its climax, it turns out to be completely predictable."
